100 days of making comics (week 8)

This week brings a medley of my daily diary, a Yiddish fairy tale, and the diary of the Queen of the Underworld, and ends with a comics announcement about the end of this project and the start of a new one. As always, I hope you enjoy!

Note: ‘Cholent’ is a hefty slow-cooked stew of beans, barley, potatoes, carrots and other variable ingredients.

The Magic Fish and the Wishing Ring

The following exercise is ‘draw me a story’ in 12 panels. I chose this Yiddish folktale, from the Yiddish Folktales anthology by Beatrice Weinreich. It’s a silent strip — no words! What do you think is going on here?

I think I bit off more than I could chew with this story! With only 3 panels left, I had well over two thirds of the story still to go! So I decided to choose scenes that stuck out the most in my mind.

And then realised I was not at all happy with the “hero” of the story. He does some things that are NOT COOL and then somehow ends up as king at the end. Hmmm.

So I chose to end my retelling with this series of scenes where the female characters have their say in no uncertain terms.

The 55 day project

It turns out I am not as much of an artistic multi-tasker at the moment as I thought. And so my 100 day project has become a 55 day project. I could think of no better way to explain the ending of a comics project than in the form of a comic…!

Thanks so much for joining me on this comic-making adventure. As many of you will know, comics are a great love of mine, so I’m sure there will be more appearing in the not too distant future. In the meantime, I look forward to sharing my latest project with you in the coming days!

  1. I think we’re all missing the ability to share those wonderfully funny moments that happen with our dear friends, the ones that literally bring us to tears, I know I certainly am.
How’s your “monster walking” going (that did make me smile…in a very supportive way 😘) is it helping at all? Take care Divsy xx
